Can anyone tell me about the obedience portion of the AD? I cannot seem to find a description of it here or elsewhere. Also, how does one find out where/when the AD test is held?

Typically in new England these are hosted by USA clubs

I "believe" the obedience is fairly basic

Generally the judge will just make you heal down and back a short distance with a sit or 2 on leash, after you have ran your AD. Just to see that the dog is not fatigued out of his mind. LOL.. Really, no biggie.. My experience after doing 3 of them...

It varies from judge to judge but most time it some basic heeling work and maybe a recall to show that the dog is still lucid.

Does one need a score book for this exercise?

Regarding the obedience, it varies from judge to judge. I've had some judges do group heeling on leash of all the dogs together and that's all there is. I had another judge that wanted almost an entire BH routine! I've had other judges want to see a jump and retrieve (if the dog knows it). Years ago, the judge wanted all the dogs to do a meter jump. My son's Flat-coated Retriever hadn't been taught to jump and we literally taught her that day, starting with a few boards, then gradually raising it up to a full meter, which she climbed. I've never seen that since, however. I've even seen some judges skip the obedience entirely, saying he'd seen enough during the AD. I should say that it had poured rain the entire AD that time, so everyone was pretty miserable by the time it ended, including the judge. :D

I guess I better start working on some formal OB on our off days. I really haven't done much with him in that regard. He knows how to do most basic but I have not enforced precision work. Off to look up BH routines, I wouldn't know one if it bit me on the ankle. Thank you for the input, it's very appreciated. I'm not aware of any clubs up here so I am on my own and this is my first "working" dog.
